What is educational therapy?

Educational therapy uses research-based instruction for students with dyslexia, reading comprehension disability, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, executive function weaknesses, autism, non-verbal learning disability, anxiety, depression, and auditory and visual processing challenges. It is one-on-one instruction, specifically designed to address a student's underlying processing differences. I work with students at my office, or in their home or school setting. The goal of educational therapy is not only to improve academic function, but to build self-confidence and self-advocacy skills. Some of the instructional programs and resources I use in my practice include Recipe for Reading (Bloom & Taub, 2005), How to Teach Spelling (Rudginsky & Haskell, 1997), Multisensory Teaching of Basic Language Skills (Birsh, 2005), Equipped for Reading Success (Kilpatrick, 2016), Executive Skills and Reading Comprehension (Cartwright, 2015), Words (Henry, 2010), Speech to Print (Moats, 2010), and Smart but Scattered Teens (Guare & Dawson, 2013). Any instructional practices used to treat dyslexia are aligned with the Science of Reading (SOR) as established by the reading research community.

I have a BA in history from Scripps College, a State Clear Teaching Credential, grades k-12, from UCLA, and a Doctorate in Curriculum and Teaching/Reading from USC. I am also a member of the Association of Educational Therapists (AET), the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), the International Literacy Association (ILA), and Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder (CHADD), as well as IMSE (Institute for Multi-Sensory Education) trained.

If your child has been diagnosed with a learning challenge, or you suspect that there may be one, please do not hesitate to contact me for an initial consultation.  I would love to become a member of the team helping your child soar to a brighter future!
